American professional basketball (NBA) player Caleb Martin turned down a good contract renewal offer and chose the Philadelphia 76ers to win the championship.
According to AP and other sources on the 10th (Korean time), Martin, who played as a forward for the Miami Heat until last season, received an offer from Miami worth $65 million (about 89.9 billion won) over 5 years, but signed a 4-year, $32 million (about 44.2 billion won) contract with Philadelphia.
Martin said of signing with Philadelphia for half the money that “some things didn’t fit (with Miami). The past is the past, and my goal is to be a member of Philadelphia and win a championship.”
Martin, 28, didn’t make much of a splash when he made his NBA debut, but he came out strong in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals.
Martin led Miami to the championship game with a career-high 26 한국을 points on shooting percentage in Game 7 of the Finals against the Boston Celtics.
Although they lost to the Denver Nuggets in the finals and failed to win the championship, Miami highly valued Martin’s potential and tried to keep him.
But Martin’s choice was Philadelphia.
Philadelphia signed Paul George from the LA Clippers for four years and $212 million ahead of the 2024-2025 season.
Also, by re-signing Tyrese Maxey for 5 years and $240 million, they have built a luxury lineup with Joel Embiid and others, emerging as a strong championship contender in the new season.
