Golf gold medalist Shofley gave gold ring to caddie in Tokyo

Xander Schauffele (USA), who won gold in men’s golf at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, gave his caddie a gold ring.

Shofley’s caddie Austin Keiser, who is competing in Paris as the defending champion, said he received the gold ring from Shofley after the first round on Wednesday (June 3).

In Olympic golf, the winner gets the gold medal, but caddies don’t get medals.

In professional tournaments with prize money, they even get a bonus of up to 10 percent of the winner’s prize money, but Olympic golf has no prize money, so they don’t expect that.

Kaiser also shared in the gold medal at Tokyo, but didn’t expect to be compensated.

But at the end of 2021, Schauffley invited him to lunch and popped out a gold ring, Keiser said.

The ring was engraved with the Olympic symbol, the five rings and the U.S. flag on the top and the words “Olympic Team” and “Tokyo” on the other side.

“I think Shofley felt bad that I didn’t win a gold medal, so he wanted to give me something special,” Kaiser recalls, adding, “I was in tears the moment I got it.”

“I cried when I got it,” Kaiser said, adding that he kept the ring and a flag from the 18th hole of Kasumigaseki Country Club, where the Tokyo Olympic golf competition was held, in a drawer at home.

When golf was reinstated as an Olympic sport at the 2016 Rio Games, the debate over whether caddies should be given medals sparked a debate that is still ongoing.

Rio bronze medalist Matt Kuchar (USA) even gave his bronze medal to his caddie, John Wood. 안전한 파워볼사이트
